Dr. Seuss’ personal story is one of perseverance. He started
his career as a cartoonist, transitioned into advertising and
eventually�and lucky for us! �became a children’s book
author. For three decades, it was advertising that paid the
bills. It was really his 13th book, The Cat in the Hat, that put
him on the map.

And it came 20 years after his first
book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,
published in 1937. Mulberry Street was rejected by
anywhere from 20 to almost 30 publishers, depending on
various versions of the story told by Dr. Seuss, who was
known to embellish if it meant a better story, according to
his biography by Philip Nel.
And he wrote a children’s book even earlier, but it was never
published. His first book, according to Nel, was written the
same year he and his wife Helen learned she could not
have children. He would eventually have two step daughters
when he married a second time, but like many other
renowned children’s book authors who did not have children
�Lewis Carroll, Beatrix Potter and Maurice Sendak�he
